Fun Dolphin Facts You Never Knew
Dolphins are not only attractive but they are also considered to be among the most intelligent animals on the planet. Following your decision on a dolphin name, it’s time to impress your friends and family with some of these fascinating dolphin facts!
Fact #1: Dolphins Are Carnivores
Fish, squid, octopus, crabs, cephalopods, and other marine creatures are among the foods eaten by dolphins.
The diet of smaller dolphins is generally fish and other tiny prey. Sea lions, seabirds, sharks, and penguins are eaten by larger dolphins, such as the killer whale (did you know that a killer whale is essentially a dolphin?).
Dolphins frequently work together to surround and circle their prey in order to prevent it from fleeing. They continue to circle until the prey is pushed into a tiny, tight ball. The dolphins take turns swimming through the circle to pick out the fish that can’t get away after it’s been trapped.

Fact #2: Dolphins Only Use Half of Their Brain While Sleeping.
Dolphins and whales have an odd sleeping pattern. They sleep with only half of their brain, which is known as “unihemispheric slow-wave sleep.” When a dolphin sleeps, one hemisphere of its brain is turned off and the other eye is closed. This permits the dolphin to keep an eye on what’s going on around them while also controlling their breathing.
Some dolphins are immobile at the surface of the water while sleeping. They may also swim slowly at times. Each side of a dolphin’s brain sleeps for around 4 hours per 24 hours.
Dolphins developed this sleeping pattern for a variety of reasons. Half of their brain is required to control their respiration and keep an eye out for danger as they sleep. They may become prey to larger ocean predators if they are unaware of their surroundings.
Fact #3: Dolphins Have a Long Life Span.
Dolphins have varying life spans, however, the common bottlenose dolphin can live for up to 50 years! Veterinarians can count the rings within each tooth to establish a dolphin’s age. Each year of life is represented by a growth ring.
Habitat, diet, health status, species, region, and level of endangerment all have an effect on how long a dolphin lives.
A dolphin can swim faster than 20 miles per hour.
Flipper wasn’t given the nickname “faster than lightning” for nothing! When dolphins are in a hurry or trying to get away from something, they may reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. However, their normal swimming pace is around 7-8 miles per hour.
Dolphins utilize their tail, or fluke, to generate force that propels them through the water at this speed. The flukes function as wings, creating a lift that propels them forward.
